Abijah CLARK
1765-1839

This page last updated: 17 August 2007

Abijah2 CLARK (John1) was born to John CLARK and Martha WESTCOTT on 16 March 1765[1] at Bedford, Westchester County, New York.[2]

About 1788 in Westchester County,[3] he married Hannah INGERSON,[4] daughter of Jonathan INGERSOLL / INGERSON and Abigail WEED.[5]  By 1790, they had moved to Saraghtoga [sic] Township, Albany (later to become Milton {1792} Saratoga {1791}) County, the census listing 1 male over 16, Abijah, and two females, Hannah and, presumably a relative or an unknown daughter that died young.[6]  By 1799, Abijah and his brother, Ichabod, were paying taxes on farms they owned in Milton, Saratoga County.[7]  In 1800, they lived in Milton, with a large contingent of former residents of Westchester County, which included both of their parents.  They had two boys, which would be Ichabod and Seth, however, no daughter is listed.[8]   Other than his nephew, there is no Abijah CLARK found in the 1810 Census in Saratoga County.  There is an Elijah Clark in Araulius Township that could be Abijah.  The census lists two males, under 10, born between 1801 and 1809, which could be Alexander at age 1 and Thomas at age 8; 2 males age 10 to 15, which could be Seth at age 15 and Ichabod about 16; one girl under 10 which could be Laura, about 10 or 11, and a woman age 26-45, which would be Hannah at age 44.  By 1820, they had moved to Aurelius, Cayuga County, New York, with Abijah’s parents and several brothers.  Three boys were living with them.[9]  By 1827, they had moved to Riga Township, Monroe County, New York where they had purchased 4 acres of land.[10]  The 1830 census for Riga lists three males and one female living with Abijah and Hannah.[11]

Abijah died on 20 May 1839[12] in Lodi, Washtenaw County, Michigan and is buried there at Lodi Plains Cemetery.  His nephew, Jotham CLARK wrote about him:

Abijah was born in the town of Bedford, Westchester Co., New York, in the year 1765; he was married to Hannah Ingerson, and had five children; Seth, Laura, Ichabod, Thomas and Alexander.  Abijah and his wife lived to bury four children, for of the five only the oldest lived to a good age. The other four fell a prey to consumption although they had reached the age of marriage and left families.

Abijah died at seventy-eight.  His wife at over eighty.  This good man I remember from the early part of my life.  I loved him next to my parents. He was an agreeable companion for both young and old, and took things in a good, pleasant way.  Having of this world equal to his desires, he found no cause to murmur.  He and his wife possessed as much of the true milk of human kindness as any pair I ever new.  In my childhood and in my youth, their house was to me, as to others, a scene of joy and gladness.

To this day I think of them as giving comfort and hospitality to all that called on them.  Their remembrance is sweet. The widow and the fatherless, the poor and unprotected found a ready welcome to their fireside and table, and went away rejoicing in the friendship they had received.  Could a country be inhabited by a people of such peace-loving, peace-making spirits as he possessed, the prison bars and bolts would be thrown away as useless contrivances, more fitted for the wild beast than for man.

For a number of years he had been a member of the Baptist Church, and continued a worthy follower until his death."[13]

Hannah INGERSON was born 30 June 1766[14] at Bedford, Westchester County.  Hannah died at 80 years of age on 22 November 1846 at Lodi, Washtenaw County, Michigan and is buried there at Lodi Plains Cemetery.[15]

Children of Abijah2 CLARK and Hannah INGERSON were as follows:

+ i.    Ichabod3 CLARK was born in 1794 at Milton, Saratoga County, New York.[16]  He married Elizabeth GRAY on 14 March 1819 at Springport, Cayuga County.[17]  In 1820, Ichabod is living in Aurelius, Cayuga County, New York with one female and a male 16 to 25.[18]  In 1830, Ichabod is living in Scipio Township, Cayuga County, with a female 60-70, and a male 20-30.[19]  He died in 1840 at age 46 years of age.[20]

+ ii.    Seth CLARK, born 23 March 1795 at Milton, Saratoga County, New York; married Content INGRAHAM.[21]

iii.  Laura CLARK was born about 1800, probably in Milton, Saratoga County, New York, where her parents were living at the time.  No definite birth date has been established, but the 1800 census for her parents lists no female children.[22]  Their 1810 census shows a girl under 10, born between 1801 and 1809,[23] and the 1830 census lists her as between 30 and 39, born between 1791 and 1800.[24]

On 10 Sept, 1818, she married Nicholas GRAY at Aurelius, Cayuga County, New York[25]  They are not found in the 1820 census, but in 1830, they are living in Riga Township, Monroe County, New York, with two boys and three girls.  Her parents also live in Riga at this time.[26]  By 1840, they had moved to Fleming, Cayuga County, with, what appears to be, an extended family.[27]  Nicholas doesn’t appear in later census.  By 1852, Laura had died.[28]

Laura  and Nicholas  had five children:  Laura was born on 30 December 1825 in New York.[29]  It is assumed that she died young as a second Laura was named later;  Laura A. GRAY was born in 1828 in New York.  She married Charles Truman SCOFIELD on 27 March 1845.  They had four children:[30]  Abijah was born circa 1830 in New York or Michigan;[31]

iv.    Thomas J. CLARK was born in 1802 in New York..  He died in 1840

+ v.    Alexander H. CLARK, born 2 Jul 1809 at New York; married 1st Elizabeth S. --?--; and married 2nd Nancy G. HITCHINS.
