Thankful CLARK
1814-1855

This page last updated: 17 August 2007

Thankful3 CLARK (Thomas2, John1) was born to Thomas CLARK and Samantha FOWLER on 12 February 1814,[1] probably after her parents moved to Aurelius, Cayuga Co., New York by 1810.[2]  In 1820, at the age of 6, her parents lived in what would become Conesus, Livingston County, New York[3] She was probably living with her parents in Conesus in 1830,[4] and in Dansville, Steuben County, New York by 1840.[5]

Thankful was married to John WHITE in Dansville,[6] according to one DAR (Daughters of the American Republic) record, in 1833,[7] however there is evidence that suggests that 1833 was too early.  Another DAR record shows the dates, ‘33 and ‘44 imposed one over another, but, from the copy, it is impossible to tell which one is the overwrite.[8]  The 1840 Federal Census for Granger, Allegany County, New York, lists John WHITE, born between 1811 and 1820, living with a female, born between 1771 and 1780, and no other person.[9]  This is probably John and his widowed mother who died 1843.[10]  All of Thomas CLARK’s unmarried children, including Thankful, are accounted for in the 1840 Dansville census, living at home with their parents.[11]  John and Thankful’s first known child was born in May of 1845.[12]  This would place their marriage between 1840 and 1844, probably 1844.

In 1850, John and Thankful are farming in Granger Township, Allegany County.  Their children are listed as: Emily, age 6; Jonas, age 4; Clarissa, age 2; and Lewis, age 3/12.[13]    During this period, John was appointed Captain of the State Militia of the section where he resided, by Governor Seward, a commission from which he had to resign when he moved from Allegany County.[14]

By 1852,[15] John and Thankful removed to Ashbury (Asbury), Northville Township, LaSalle County, Illinois, just south of Sandwich, DeKalb County,[16] following his brother Moses WHITE, who moved there in 1851. [17]  Their son, Lewis P.,  died on 17 September 1852, at Ashbury (Asbury).[18]

Thankful died in 1855 at age 41, while living in Northville Twp., LaSalle Co and is buried at Millington-Newark Cemetery, Fox Township, Kendall County, Illinois.[19]
