1819-1893

This page last updated: 12 September 2007

Charles H.7 PAYSON (William6, Asa5, Asa4, Jonathan3, John2, Edward1 PAYSON) was born to William PAYSON and Betsey CRANSE  on 14 June 1819 in Ulster, Bradford Co., Pennsylvania.[1]  Charles H. was living with his parents in Towanda Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania in 1820,[2] in Barton Township, Tioga County, New York, in 1830,[3] and in Litchfield Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania in 1840.[4]

He married Mary Ann RUSSELL on 15 August 1848 in Waverly, Tioga County, New York.[5]  By 1849, the family had moved to Barton, Tioga County, where he appeared on the Assessment Roll of the Real and Personal Estate there.[6]  In 1850, Charles, a carpenter, and Mary Ann are living at Barton Township, Tioga County, with son, Edward [sic], 6 months of age.[7]  In 1856, Charles H. is a carriage maker in Factoryville, Barton Township.[8]  In 1860, Charles H., carriage maker, Mary A., Charles E., age 10; Henry, age 8; and Mary E., age 5, are living at Waverly, Barton Township.[9]  In 1865, Charles H. and his family moved to Sterling, Whiteside County, Illinois, where his brothers, William E and Edward C. PAYSON had moved by 1860.[10]  On 3 June 1867 Charles H.’s home was struck by lightning, as told in a local newspaper:

Struck By Lightning - During the severe storm on Monday last [03 Jun 1867], the residence of Mr. C. H. Payson, near the bridge on the south side of the river, was struck by lightning.

First striking the chimney, the lightning entered the roof, tearing it up considerably, and thence passed into the cellar.  It apparently again took an upward coarse, coming up through the floor near the stove. The floor was torn from its matchings and badly damaged.  Mrs. Payson was sitting near the stove at the time, and other persons were in the same room, but very fortunately none were seriously injured.[11]

In 1870, Charles and Mary A., are living at Rock Falls Post Office, Rock Falls Township, Whiteside County, with Chas, Henry, Lizzie, and Frank, age 8.[12]  In 1870 and 1781, C. H. PAYSON was a Trustee of the Town of Rock Falls.  From 1875 through 1877, Charles H. PAYSON was an Assessor for Coloma Township, Whiteside County.[13]  In 1880, C. H.,  Mary and Lizzie are living at Rock Falls.[14]

Charles H. died of cancer on 7 September 1893 in Rock Falls, at age 74.[15]  He was buried in 1893 in IOOF Cemetery in Rock Falls.[16]

From his biography:

[He] removed to Rock Falls . . . occupying one of the finest homes in the city, which was erected by our subject soon after locating here. He became one of the most prominent business men of the city, and was extensively engaged in the manufacture of carriages for many years.

He was a man of influence and stood high in the community where he had so long made his home. He was widely known and very popular with every one. He was noted for his strict integrity and incorruptible honor, and though he was never a member of any church he was a regular attendant of the Methodist church and a close follower of the principles of morality. In all the relations of life he was found true to every trust reposed in him, and it is safe to say that no man in Rock Falls had more friends or was more highly respected than Charles H. Payson.[17]

 From his obituary:

Charles H. Payson ... died this morning a little after five o'clock...  His death was the result of cancer, complicated with other diseases, from which he had suffered since 1882.  The deceased was born June 14, 1819, at Ulster, Bradford County, Pa.  He was reared and educated at Waverly, N.Y., where in 1848 he was wedded to Mary A. Russell.  In 1864 the Paysons left Waverly and came to Sterling, but in the following year they moved to Rock Falls where the family has since resided.  Their present abode was one of the first houses in Rock Falls, having been built by Mr. Payson soon after settling there.  The deceased was a carriage manufacturer for many years.  He was the father of four children, Charles Edgar, Harry E., Lizzie E. (who was the late wife of Hon. J.D.[sic] White) and Frank R.  The three sons and the widow survive him.  ...The funeral services will be held at ten o'clock Saturday morning in the late home on Payson St.[18]

In 1900, after the death of her husband, Mary Ann (RUSSELL) PAYSON and her son, Edger C. PAYSON, are living with her widowed son-in-law, John W. (Wilbur) WHITE and his children in Coloma Township, Whiteside County.[19]  Mary Ann died 01 May 1908 and is buried at the IOOF Cemetery in Rock Falls.[20]

 Her obituary reads:

Beloved Rock Falls Woman Passes Away at 7 O'clock Friday Evening After Long Illness - Mrs. Mary A. Payson died Friday evening at 7 o'clock of congestion of the liver. Mrs. Payson has been in poor health for several month past, but during the past three weeks has  been especially poorly, gradually growing weaker until the end came. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church in this city, the Rev. F. W. Nazarine officiating. Internment will be in the Rock Falls cemetery.

Mary Ann Russell was born June 2, 1825, near Ithica [sic], N. Y. She received her education in that city and was married in Waverly, N. Y. in September 1848, to Charles H. Payson. They came west in the spring of 1865 and settled in Rock Falls, where Mrs. Payson has since lived with the exception of three years spent in Rock Island. Mr. Payson passed away in 1893.

Four children were born to the union, only one of who survives. He is  Frank C. Payson of Mankato Minn.  The deceased are C. E. Payson, Harry E. Payson and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth White. There survives also one brother and two sisters, Jacob P. Russell of Brunswick, Neb. Mrs. T. Jeff Smith of Antioch, Ill., and Mrs. Sarah Nichols of Rock Falls.

Mrs. Payson was a lifelong Methodist.  She united with the First Methodist church of Sterling, later transferring to the Fourth Street church when it was erected. When the Rock Falls church was formed, she was one of its charter members and has always been true to it teachings in every way. She was an upright Christian woman, an angel of mercy and a woman whose memory will serve as a lasting monument to an unselfish life.

Those from out of town who are expected to attend the funeral are Miss Daisy Wood, Miss Bessie White and Messrs. Leo and Ralph White of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, Frank Payson of Mankato, Minn., Hon. H. L. Sheldon of Champaign. Mrs. Emma Russell of Milledgeville, and Mrs. T. J. Smith of Antioch.[21]

Mary Ann RUSSELL was born in, 2 June 1825 near Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York[22] to  Jacob H. RUSSELL and Polly DUNN.[23]  Of Mary Ann’s ancestry, the RUSSELLs have been traced back to Daniel RUSSELL (1680-1766) and Deborah MACY, (1679-1742), of Nantucket, Nantucket County, Massachusetts.[24]

Children of Charles H.7 PAYSON and Mary Ann RUSSELL were as follows:

i. Charles Edgar8 PAYSON was born on 21 January 1850 at Factoryville, Barton Township, Tioga County, New York.[25]  On 9 January 1873, he married Sarah E. SHIRLEY in Whiteside County.[26]  In 1880, C. E and Sarah PAYSON are living at Rock Falls, Whiteside County, Illinois with their children: Harry S., age 6; C. H., age 4; Mary A, age 2; and Wm. E., 5 months.  Living next to them is Edgar’s parents, Charles H. and Mary.[27]  In 1900, as Edgar C., divorced, he is living with his brother-in-law, John Wilbur WHITE and his family. Edgar’s mother, Mary A. (RUSSELL) PAYSON is also living with them.[28]  He died on 26 November 1904 and was buried at the IOOF Cemetery, Rock Falls.  A search for Sarah and her children didn’t turn up anything positive.

Children of  Charles Edgar8 PAYSON and Sarah E. SHIRLEY, all born in Illinois,  are as follows:

i. Harry S.9 PAYSON, born, calculated, in 1874

ii. C. H. PAYSON, born, calculated, in 1876

v. Nellie PAYSON was born on 24 March 1882 and died on 30 July 1882, at 4 months, 6 day of age.  She is buried at the IOOF Cemetery in Rock Falls.[29]

ii. Harry E. PAYSON was born on 3 September 1853,[30] probably at Barton Township, Tioga County, New York where his parents were living at the time.[31]  On 18 October 1882, he married Myrtie M. SAWYER in Cook County, Illinois.[32]  He was engaged in the cigar and tobacco business in Chicago and was also a telegraph operator.[33]   He died in 1898 at Maywood, Cook County.[34]

From his obituary:

DEATH OF HARRY PAYSON

Former Rock Falls Man Died at His Home in Chicago Last Night

Harry Payson, formerly of this city, died at his home in Chicago last night.  He was about forty-five years of age and was a son of Mrs. Mary A. Payson of this city.  He was raised in this city and went to Chicago a number of years ago, where he has since resided.  His death it is thought resulted from nervous prostration, with which he had been a sufferer since last fall.

His wife and two brothers, Edward of Rock Falls and Frank residing in Minnesota, survive.  His brother and J. W. White went to Chicago today, where funeral arrangements will be made.  It is thought the services will be held in this city.[35]

Nothing further is found for Harry or his wife.

+ iii. Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) PAYSON was born 23 October 1854 in Waverly, Tioga County, New York.  She married John Wilbur WHITE on 5 April 1883 at Rock Falls, Whiteside County, Illinois.  She died on 30 January 1893 at Elgin, Kane County, Illinois
