John PAYSON

1643-1719

This page last updated: 24 February 2008

Deacon John2 Payson (Edward1 PAYSON), son of Edward PASON and Mary ELIOT, was born on 11 June[1] and baptized 19 June 1643, at Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.[2]  John married, 1st,  Bethsheba TilEston at Roxbury.[3]  By 1670, he is living at Dorchester, Suffolk County.[4]  Dorchester  was founded in 1630 by settlers that arrived on the ship Mary and John.  It was annexed as part of Boston in 1874.  Dorchester lies about five and one half miles south of Cambridge.

On August 24, 1676, John appears on a list of Assignment of Wages of Dorchester Towne as a soldier in King Philip’s War.[5]  King Philip’s War (1675-76) was a conflict between Anglo Christianity and Indian religious cultures and continuing colonial expansion.   In 1662, in an attempt to intimidate Wamsutta, the leader of the Wampanoag, Major Josiah Winslow took him by gunpoint and brought him to Plymouth for questioning.  Soon after, Wamsutta died.  Wamsutta’s brother, Metacomet, known as “King Philip”, now the Grand Sachem (Chief) of the Wampanoag Confederacy, was greatly angered.  Ironically, King Phillip’s father, Massasoit helped the Pilgrims of Plymouth survive their first winter of 1620/21.  By 1675, conditions for the Indians became intolerable, and “King Philip” led Indians of the Wampanoag, and eventually the Nipmuck, Pocumtick, Squakheag, Norwottock, Agawam, Algonquin, and Narragansett tribes on a series of raids, killing and kidnapping colonials, burning towns to the ground in Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.  The Narragansetts were neutral until December of 1675, when the British attacked them in a “preemptive strike” of their fort.  Ultimately, over 600 colonists and 3,000 Indians killed, and another several hundred who had surrendered were sold into slavery in the Caribbean.   When King Philip was killed, his body was drawn and quartered, he was beheaded and his head stuck on a pole and put on display.

John is listed as a Freeman in 1680.[6]  Bathsheba died 20 February 1681 at Dorchester.[7  By 1864, John resided back at Roxbury where he married Hannah (--?--) with whom he had three known children, all born in Roxbury.  John was ordained before 1715 and was a Deacon of the First Church of Christ at Roxbury.[8]  He died on 15 November 1719 at Roxbury, at age 76.[9]  Hannah died on 25 November 1724.[10]

Bathsheba TILESTON was baptized on 17 September 1649 at Dorchester, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, the daughter of Thomas TILESTON and Elizabeth, his wife.[11]  Thomas was at Dorchester by 1634, where he received a grant of land there.  He became a freeman on 9 March 1637.  He died 24 June 1694, at the age of 83.[12]  His will, written 19 February 1694 and probated 12 July 1694, made bequeaths to sons, Timothy and Onesiphorus, and to the children of his daughters, Ruth Foster and Bathsheba Pason [sic], deceased.[13]

Children of Deacon John2 Payson and Bathsheba TilEston were as follows:

i. Johanna3 Payson, daughter of John PASON, was born on 18 September 1670 at Dorchester, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.[14]  She married Thomas LYON on 23 October 1690.[15]  She died on 18 August 1735 at Dorchester, at 64 years of age.[16]

Thomas LYON was born, calculated, in 1664 and died on 9 February 1750 at Dorchester at the age of 86.[17]

Children of Johanna PAYSON and Thomas LYON, all born at Dorchester, Suffolk County, Massachusetts,  were as follows:

i. Bathsheba LYON was born on 14 July 1691.[18]

ii. Johanna LYON was born on 28 August 1693.[19]

iii. George LYON was born on 3 June 1696.[20]  He died at Dorchester on 20 December 1723 at 27 years of age.[21]

iv. Hannah LYON was born on 27 April 1699.[22]

v. Thomas LYON was born 20 May 1701.[23]

vi. Henry LYON was born on 20 August 1703.[24]

ii. Bathsheba Payson, daughter of John PASON, was baptized on 31 March 1672 at Roxbury, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.[25]  She died on 16 May 1688 at Dorchester, Suffolk County, Connecticut, at age 16.[26]

iii. Presselah (Priscilla) Payson was born on 28 July 1674 at Dorchester, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.[27]

On-line genealogies state that she married Parke WILLIAMS, supposedly in 1698 at Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, however I cannot find a marriage record for them in Massachusetts or Connecticut.  That they were married is somewhat confirmed by records of three children born to Park and Priscilla WILLIAMS at Roxbury, two of them named the same as Priscilla’s parents, John and Bathsheba.  The on-line genealogies list these three children as well as seven others.  Some of these genealogies state they were born at Roxbury, others state they were born at Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, with no sources given, however I have been unable to find records for these births in specific searches of Lebanon Connecticut and Roxbury Massachusetts vital records, nor in searches of vital records for the colonies of Connecticut and Massachusetts.  These same names in the same order with different dates of birth show up as children of Samuel and Sara (May) Williams, brother of Parke.  All of the children will be listed for the benefit of future research.

Priscilla, wife of Park WILLIAMS, died in her 71st year on 5 April 1745 at Lebanon, New London, Connecticut.[28]

Parke WILLIAMS was born on 11 January 1676 to Samuel WILLIAMS[29] and Theoda PARKE.[30]

Verified children (by me) of Priscilla3 PAYSON and Parke WILLIAMS were as follows:

i. Samuel4 WILLIAMS was born 29 July 1699 at Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.[31]

ii. Bathsheba WILLIAMS was born 28 August 1701 at Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.[32]

iii. John WILLIAMS was born on 6 June 1706 at Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.[33]

Unverified children (by me) of Priscilla3 PAYSON and Parke WILLIAMS, born at Roxbury, Suffolk County or Lebanon, New London, Connecticut were as follows:

i. Ebenezer4 WILLIAMS, born 1708.[34]

ii. Eleazer WILLIAMS, born 1710.[35]

iii. William WILLIAMS, born 1712.[36]

iv. Theoda WILLIAMS born 1714.[37]

v. Sarah WILLIAMS, born 1715.[38]

vi., Elizabeth WILLIAMS, born 1718.[39]

vii. Martha WILLIAMS, born 1720.[40]

iv. John Payson, Deacon was born on 17 July 1676 at Dorchester, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.[41]  On 14 January 1701, he married Elizabeth TUCKER, daughter of Brother Manassah TUCKER, at Milton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.[42]

In December of 1776, John PASON and his wife, Elizabeth, were admitted as members of The Second meeting House of the Church of Christ, at Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.  He was ordained a Deacon before 1732, and, before March of 1738/39, he “was set off to the Second Precinct where he was a Deacon.”[43]  It is assumed that his first wife, Elizabeth, died, because, on 16 June 1738, he married Elizabeth CHILD at Roxbury.[44]  John died on 6 January 1747 at Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.[45]

Children of Deacon John3 PAYSON and Elizabeth TUCKER, both born at Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, were as follows:

i. Elizabeth4 PAYSON was born 6 December 1706.[46]

ii. Ebenezer PAYSON was born 8 January 1711.[47]

Deacon John3 PAYSON and Elizabeth CHILD had no children together.

+ v. Captain Jonathan Payson, born 18 August 1678 at Dorchester, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts; married Mary Cook.

vi. Prudence PAYSON was born on 1 March 1680 at Dorchester, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.[48]  On 2 December 1702, Prudence PASON married, 1st, Richard WHEELER at Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.[49]  Richard WHEELER was born on 10 March 1677 at Stonington, New London County, Connecticut to Isaac WHEELER and Martha PARKE.  Richard died at Stonington on 12 April 1712,[50]

Prudence married, 2nd, Christopher AVERY on 1 April 1714.[51]

Children of Prudence3 PAYSON and Richard WHEELER, some of them verified by records that I have found, and others that are not verified

i. John WHEELER was born 31 January 1705/06.[52]

ii. Jonathan WHEELER was born 7 February 1707/08 at Stonington, New London, Connecticut.[53]

iii. Richard WHEELER was born on 23 July 1710 at Stonington, New London, Connecticut.  He married Anna PELLET of Canterbury, Connecticut on 23 August 1734.  Richard died on 10 April 1749 [54]

iv. Prudence WHEELER was born on 25 September 1712 at Stonington, New London, Connecticut.  She married Ebenezer GEER on 2 January 1735 at Stonington.  Tragedy struck the WHEELER family, when in early 1752-3, four of her children, between the ages of three and fifteen, died of scarlet fever. Prudence died on 2 June 1797 at North Groton, New London, Connecticut.  She was described as “a most worthy woman.  She was a good counselor and her children benefited much by her wise and judicious management.”

Ebenezer GEER was born on 1 April 1710 at North Groton.  He died there on 28 August 1763.  Both Prudence and Ebenezer are buried in the Old Episcopal Churchyard at Ledyard, Connecticut.  They had ten children together.[55]

Children of Prudence3 PAYSON and Christopher AVERY, all born at Groton, New London County, Connecticut, were as follows:

i. Jabez AVERY was born on 26 March 1717.[56]

ii. Hannah AVERY was born on 10 February 1718.[57]

iii. Jacob AVERY was born 26 August 1721.[58]

Children of Deacon John2 Payson and Hannah (--?--) were as follows:

+i. Edward3 Payson was born 26 June 1685 at Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, married Thankful Holmes at Pomfret, Windham County, Connecticut.

+ii. Joseph Payson was born on 24 February 1686 at Dorchester, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.[59]  He married Mehitable Winchester on 4 March 1713 at Roxbury, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts. They lived at Milton, and later moved to Boston.[60]  He died in October 1748 at Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts, at age 61.[61]

+iii. Captain Benjamin Payson was born on 25 October 1688 at Roxbury, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.[62]  As Benjamin PASON, he married Mary Williams on 25 November 1713 at Roxbury.[63]  He was referred to as Captain when he died on 31 May 1769 at age 81 at Roxbury.[64]
