William PAYSON
1791-1856

This page last updated: 15 September 2007

William6 Payson (Asa5, Asa4, Jonathan3, John2, Edward1 PAYSON) was born to Asa PAYSON and Lucy BISHOP on 8 November 1791 in Woodstock Township, Windham County, Connecticut.[1]  By 1812, he owned property at Orwell, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, where he and his brother, Nathan, are paying taxes.[2]

During the War of 1812 (1812-1815), a William Payson enlisted on 29 October 1814 at Barkhamstead, Litchfield County, Connecticut, in the 37th Infantry of Windham County, Connecticut, under the command of Captain Riley Sweet,  He was listed as deserted on 4 March 1815.  It is not known if this is our William PAYSON, but no other William Payson is  found in the 1810 or 1820 Federal Census Index, either as an exact or Soundex match.

It is presumed that William married Betsey Cranse[3] before September 1817, when their first child, Emily, was born.[4]  They were probably married in Bradford County, Pennsylvania, where Betsey’s family was living at the time.[5]  William PAYSON, a deputy sheriff, lived in the Towanda Courthouse.[6]  By 1820, Wm. Payson and Betsey are farming at Towanda Township, with a boy and girl, both under the age of ten[7] which would be Emily PAYSON, born in September of 1817;[8] and Charles H. PAYSON, born 14 June 1819.[9]  By 1830, they were living in Barton Township, Tioga County, New York,[10] which is just over the Pennsylvania border, about 20 miles north of Towanda.  In the family are two boys under five, which would be Edward, less than a year old,[11] and Andrew, born in 1825;[12] two boys between five and ten, which would be Charles and William, born in 1822,[13] one girl under five, which would be Sarah, born in 1824.[14] and one girl between ten and fifteen, which would be Emily.  In 1840, the Wm. PAYSON family moved back to Bradford County, Pennsylvania, to Litchfield Township.[15]  In 1850, farming in Litchfield Township, are Wm. PAYSON, wife Betsey, son Edward, a farmer, and a Judson Redd, 18, a farmer.[16]

On 19 March 1855, at Litchfield Township, William payson made his will, naming his wife Betsey, sons, Charles H., William C. and Edward C. PAYSON, and daughters Sarah ILITT and Emily OWEN.  The will states that his son, Andrew G. PAYSON, was deceased.[17]  William died on 5 April 1856 and was buried at Forest Home Cemetery, Waverly Township, Tioga County, New York, at age 64.[18]  His estate was probated on 11 April 1856 in Bradford Co., Pennsylvania.[19]

Betsey Cranse was born about 1792,[20] to Philip KRANS and Elizabeth YEAKLY[21] probably in Athens, Bradford (then Luzerne) County Pennsylvania, where her father was living at the time.[22]  After William’s death, Betsey, was living with her daughter Sarah and her husband, Lewis Ilette/ILOTT in Waverly, Tioga County, New York in 1860[23] and 1870,[24]   Betsey’s death and burial has not  been found.

Betsey CRANSE’s earliest known ancestor is Ernst KRANTZ, who, in 1664,  was a court-servant at Unterreichenbach, in the Principality of Isenburg-Budingen, Hessen-Darmstadt, Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, which today is Main-Kinzig Kreis (district), Hessen, Gemany, about 50 km/60 miles north east of Frankfurt.[25]

Children of William6 PAYSON and Betsey CRANSE were as follows:

i. Emily7 PAYSON was born in September 1817 in Pennsylvania.[26]  She married Peter OSBORN,[27] presumably before their first child was born in 1845.  In 1850, Peter OSBORN, age 38 and Emily, age 30, are farming at  Sheshequin Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, with children: Laura, age 5; Wm, age 4; Sarah, age 2; and Melbourne, age 1.[28]

She married John OWEN before 1855.[29]  In 1860, John OWEN, age 48; and Emaly [sic], age 54, are farming at Wysox Township, Bradford County with Laura OSBORN [Indexed as Louisa Orslere due to a transcription error], age 15; Frederick Owen, 21; Francis Owen, female, age 18; Harriett Owen, age 12; Susan Owen, age 8; Louisa Owen, age 4; John Owen, age 2; William OSBORN [Indexed as Orslere], age 13; Milborne OSBORN [Indexed as Orslere], age 10; and a George Dennis, age 20.[30]  In 1870, Emely [sic] OWEN, a widow, is living at Towanda Township, Bradford County, with Eliza OWEN, age 14; John OWEN, age 12; a Owin Gittie, male age 10; Osborn Gittee, female age 24, and  Lewis L. Gittie, age 20.[31]  In 1880, Emily; son, L. Melvin, age 30; daughter, Lizzie S., age 23; and son, E. Galen, 18, are living in Towanda.[32]  Of interest is that Emily was listed as a widow in 1870, tow years before E. Galen was born.  In 1900, Emily P. OWEN, age 82, is living with her son Lewis OSBORNE and his family in Towanda.[33]  Emily is not found after this.

Children of Emily7 PAYSON and Peter OSBORN, all born in Pennsylvania, were as follows:[34]

i. Laura8 OSBORN was born about 1845 in Pennsylvania.[35]  Laura may be the Osborn Gittie, age 24,, born about 1846, that is living with Emely [sic) OWEN in the 1870 census.  Also living with Emily is an Owen Gittie, age 10; and  a Lewis Gittie, age 20.[36]

ii. William OSBORN was born about 1846.

iii. Sarah OSBORN was born about 1849.

iv. Melbourne OSBORN was born about 1849.[37]  He is listed as Milborn, age 10, born, calculated, in 1850 in the 1860 census.[38]  This may be L. Melvin, age 30, born, calculated, in 1850, living with his mother, Emily OWEN in 1880.[39]  This may be the Lewis OSBORNE, born in July of 1850, son of Emily P. OWEN who is living with him in 1900.[40]

Children of Emily7 PAYSON and John OWEN depend on when they were married.  John had children from a previous marriage.  Susan, Louisa (Elizabeth) and John are listed as possible children since they were born after 1850, when Emily was married to Peter OSBORN:

i.    Susan8 OWEN, was born about 1852.[41]

ii.    Louisa OWEN was born, calculated, in 1856.[42]  In 1870, Louisa is not listed, however she may now be called Elizabeth S. OWEN, age 14,  born, calculated, in 1856.[43]  In 1880, Lizzie S, age 23, born, calculated, in 1857, is listed.[44]

ii.    John OWEN was born, calculated, in 1858 in Pennsylvania.[45]

iii.    E. Galen OWEN was born, calculated, in 1862 Pennsylvania.[46]

+ ii. Charles H. PAYSON born 14 June 1819 in Ulster, Bradford Co., Pennsylvania; married Mary Ann RUSSELL.

iii. William C. PAYSON was born, calculated, in 1822  in Pennsylvania.  In 1850, he is a laborer, living in Towanda township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  This appears to be a boarding house as several other males are living there.[47]  In 1860,  Wm E. PAYSON age 39, born calculated in 1821 in Pennsylvania, with Isabella, age 38, born in England, are farming in Sterling Post Office, Mount Pleasant Township, Whiteside County, Illinois, with children: George W., age 6; Ellen, age  4, both born in Canada; Merth, a female, age 2; Wm E., age 8 months, both born in Illinois; and an Agnes Brakey, age 15, a domestic. It is thought that this is William C., as his brother, Edward C. PAYSON is living next door to him.[48]  Another brother, Charles H. PAYSON moved to Sterling in 1865.[49]  1900.  William C. is not found in the 1870 census, however, Isabella PAYSON, born in England, is running a boarding house in Kankakee Township, Kankakee County, Illinois with children: George W, age 16; born in Canada; Nellie A., age 14, born in Canada; Marcia, age 12, born in Illinois; and Willie G., age 10, born in Illinois.  There are also seven boarders listed.[50]  In 1880, as Bayson, Isabella, a widow age 53 born in England, is living at 211 28th Street, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois with son, George W.,  age 26, born in Canada; Marchall, listed as a son, age 22  however this may be an enumerator error as Marcia would also be 22 at this time; Helen Keller, age 24, born in Canada a daughter, divorced, which may be Nellie, who would also be 24; Willie, age 20; and a Bell Skelbig, 21, a servant.[51]  Isabella is not found after this.

Children of William C.7 PAYSON and Isabella (--?--) were as follows:

i.  George W.8 PAYSON, born, calculated, in 1854 in Canada.

ii.  Ellen (Nellie A.) PAYSON, born, calculated, in 1856 in Canada; may also have been known as Helen and may have married a KELLER.

iii. Merth (Marcia) PAYSON, born, calculated, in 1858 in Illinois.

iv. William E. PAYSON, born, calculated, in  November of 1859 in Illinois.

iv.    Sarah E.7 PAYSON born, calculated, in 1824.[52]   She married Lewis ILETTE, presumably before 1849, when her first child was born.  They are not found in the 1850 census.   On 19 March 1855, she was mentioned in her father’s will as daughter Sarah ILITT..[53]   In 1860,  Lewis and Sarah E. ILOTT [sic] are living at Waverly Post Office, Barton Township, Tioga County, New York with children: Emily, age 11 and Wm. C, age 8.  Also living with them is Sarah’s mother, Betsey PAYSON.  Lewis is a carpenter.[54]  In 1870, Lewis and Sarah E. ILETTE are living at Factoryville Post Office, Barton Township with their daughter, Emma, age 22, Sarah’s mother, Mrs. Wm. PAYSON, age 78; and an Albert Blauveit, age 19, an apprentice carpenter to Lewis.[55]  In 1880, Lewis and Sarah ILETTE are still living at Factoryville.[56]  They later moved to Chicago where Lewis retired.[57]  Nothing further is found on them

Children of Sarah E.7 PAYSON and Lewis ILETTE were as follows:

i.  Emily8 ILETTE was born circa 1849.

ii.  William ILETTE was born circa 1852.

v.    Andrew G.7 PAYSON was born, calculated from his gravestone, in 1825.  He died on 21 December 1854 and was buried in Forest Home Cemetery, Waverly, Tioga County, New York.[58]  He was mention in his fathers will:

I further direct and will that all my interest in the lands in the State if Illinois and Wisconsin or other western lands or property left by my son Andrew G. Payson deceased be sold or otherwise between my children equally . . . [59]

Illinois Public Land Record Purchase Records show transactions involving almost 100,000 acres was made by Andrew G. Payson between January of 1853 and February of 1854.[60]

vi.    Edward C. PAYSON was born, calculated, in 1830 in Pennsylvania.  In 1850, he was living with his parents in Litchfield Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.[61]  In 1860, he is living at Sterling Post Office, Mount Pleasant township, Whiteside County, Illinois.  His next door neighbor is his brother, William PAYSON.[62]  He is not found after that.
