Georg Carl PRÄÜNER
1850-1919

This page last updated: 13 February 2008

Georg Carl8 PRÄÜNER (Johann Martin7 PRAEÜNER, Johann Philipp6 PRAÜNER, Johann Michael5 BRÄÜNER, Johann Philipp Jacob4 PRÄÜNER, Leonhard3 BREÜNER, Leonhardüs2 PRAÜNER, Leonhard1 BREÜNER), son of Johann Martin PRAÜNER and Eve Marie BÜHL, was born on 24 March 1850 in Wüstenaü, Crailsheim, Württemberg, Germany.  As Georg Carl PRÄÜNER, he was baptized on 31 March 1850 at the Envangelische (Lutheran) Church Mariä Kappel, Württemberg[1] and, as Georg Carl PRÄÜNER, was confirmed there on 17 April 1864.[2]  When he was young, he learned the miller handwork and worked at Mr. Kopps mill in Lindringen, close to Ohringen for five years.[3]

Carl’s sister, Sabine Rosina (PRAEUNER) KETTERMAN and her husband, emigrated from Germany and, in 1867, settled west of what is now Battle Creek, Madison County, Nebraska.  Rosina’s husband died in the winter of 1867-68, and, upon his death, Rosina wrote to her family in Germany and urged her brothers to come to Nebraska and take advantage of the available land.[4]  Carl, as Karl Georg PRAEUNER, and brother, John (Johann Georg), immigrated to America,[5] arriving on 1 June 1869.[6] and, following Rosina’s instructions, went by rail to the Union Pacific Rail Station at Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska, and started overland following the landmarks that she told them about.  After about 60 miles, they found her on the highest hill with her dog, watching for them.[7]

In 1870, as Charlie, Carl was living with his brother John, and farming at Deer Creek Precinct, Madison County, Nebraska.[8]  Carl homesteaded on the SE 1/4 of Section 1 in Schoolcraft Precinct.[9]     From a local history book:

“Their first place of employment was with John Tiedgen who had homesteaded two miles south and one-half mile west of Battle Creek a short time before. The Praeuners took their first pay in two heifers. They trained these animals to yoke and draw the plow to break the sod for cultivation. They would work for Tiedgen all day, then walk to their homesteads five miles away and take turns to break their land and cultivate their crops at night while the other slept. The next morning they would be back at Tiedgens to earn wages to pay for their stock.”[10]

As Chas Bruner, Carl married Mary EYL on 9 May 1875 at District Schoolhouse 5, Madison County, by Lutheran Pastor F. B Rupprecht.   Carl’s brother, John and Mary’s brother, Herman, were witnesses.[11]

In 1880, Charles and Mary PRINER [sic] are farming at Deer Creek Precinct, Madison County, with children: Frederick, age 4; Katie, age 2; and Anna, age 9/12.[12]  Because of confusion between the John and Carl PRAUNER families, Carl changed the spelling of the last name to PRAEUNER, and the children were named as such.  In 1900, Carl PRAUNER and Mary are farming in Highland Precinct, Madison County, with children: Charles, age 19;  Mary A., age 18; Henry C., age 16; Caroline, age 14; Mena C., age 11; Rose, age 9; George H., age 7; Gustav G., age 5; and Lizabeth, age 3.[13]   In 1910, Carl and Mary are living in the village of Battle Creek, Madison County, with children Gustoff, Lizzie and August, age 9.[14]  Carl had moved to Battle Creek so that his children could be educated in the school, but he still ran several farms that he owned.[15]  Carl died in 1919 at Battle Creek, at age 69, and is buried at St John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Battle Creek.[16]
