Johann Heinrich10 RODEKOHR (Johann Friedrich Christoph9 RODEKOHR, Johann Christian8 RODECURT, Johann Carl Julius7, Julius Ernst6, Jobst Hinrich5, Jobst4, Justus3 RODECOURT, Johannes2 RODECORD, Jost1 RODEKORD) was born to Johann Friedrich Christoph RODEKOHR and Dorothea Maria Louise FREYE on 8 March 1860[1] at Alma, Lafayette Co., Missouri.[2]  He was living with his parents through 1880.

John was married to Anna Marie Malinda BRACKMAN on February 25, 1885 by Pastor F. J. Biltz at the Evangelical Lutheran Church at Concordia, Missouri.  Attendants were Adolph Deke, Martha (BRACKMAN) TEGELER, Henry KAMMEYER and Caroline BRACKMAN.[3]

In 1900, John H. and Anna are farming in Middleton Township, Lafayette County, Missouri.  Anna had eight children born to her by this time, seven of which were still living.  Children living with them, all born in Missouri were:  Otto, age 13; Louis, age 11; Edwin, age10; Hulda, age 6; Adolph, age 4; Arthur, age 2; and Claus (Carl), age 6/12.  The child that had died was William Friedrich Eduard, born 29 March 1892 in Alma, and died 09 October 1895 at Alma.[4]  Also living with them is John’s widowed mother, listed as Luisa Lock, age 77, born in February of 1823 in Germany, immigrating in 1840, who is listed “Mother” to the Head of Household.  The next line lists a Henry Lock, age 14, a boarder, born in Germany; and Emelia, Rogge, age 17, a servant.  It is obvious that the enumerator erred in his entry.

In 1904, the RODEKOHRs moved to Battle Creek Township, Madison County, Nebraska,

“. . . encouraged to do so by Mrs. Rodekohr's sister, Mrs. Fred Tegeler, who had already settled there.  Mr. Rodekohr left Corder, Mo with a load of household goods, livestock and machinery.  Later Mrs. Rodekohr and her children Otto, Louis, Edward, Adolph, Arthur, Carl, Hulda, Sewerna and Freda arrived by passenger train at nine o'clock in the evening.  They were met by Mr. Rodekohr in a lumber wagon and were taken to their future home which was located on the farm now owned by Arthur Rodekohr."[5]

In 1910,  farming in Highland Precinct , Madison County, are John H., his wife Anna, and children: Otto A., age 23; Louis H., age 21; Edwin C., age 20; Hulda S., age 16; Adolf G., age 12; Carl J., age 10; Sewerna M, age 8; and Frieda L., age 6.[6]

In 1920, still farming in Highland Precinct, are John H., Anna, Adolph, Arthur, Carl, Sewerna and Frieda.[7]  About 1927, the family moved to Battle Creek, Highland Precinct.[8]  In 1930, John H, Anna and son, Adolph are living on Park Avenue [Street], Village of Battle Creek, Battle Creek Precinct, Madison County.  John is the owner of his own dairy business, however, is not living on a farm.[9]

Anna died at her home, on Tuesday afternoon, 16 January 1934, after a serious illness of six weeks.  She had been in failing health for two years.   Services were held at St. John’s Lutheran church in Battle Creek, by the Rev. A.H. Schleef on Friday, 19 January and Anna was buried at the Lutheran Cemetery, Battle Creek.[10]  She was described by friends:

Mrs. Rodekohr was an every day Christian.  The beautifying influences of a pure religion were spread over a life and character as spotless and charming as was ever possessed by any of the noble women who have lived and died during the ages that are gone.  As such a life was a blessing and benefaction to all within the sphere of its influence so is the death of such a one a public misfortune, as well as an irreparable loss to the home circle made desolate by her departure

‘It is difficult to pay a fitting tribute to the memory of so noble a woman – one whose every day of life was embellished by the charming and lovable attributes of her sex.  She seemed born to inspire the love and respect of all who were so fortunate as to be acquainted with her.  No one was more willing to aid the suffering, cheer the desponding, sustain the weak and to throw over the frailties of our race the mantle of Christian charity.  And when sickness came to her, family, friends and physicians vied with each other in acts of loving kindness and tender solicitude to avert the inevitable – but love and skill were equally of no avail.  The great destroyer had placed his sign on her brow and today, hundreds who loved her are living, mourn her dead.”[11]

After the death of Anna, John lived with son, Adolph, at the house in Battle Creek.[12]  Before his death, he became ill and stayed with daughter, Hulda and her husband Carl EYL in Battle Creek.  John died at 6 a.m. on Friday, 26 December 1947[13] at the home of his daughter, Hulda.  Services were held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Battle Creek and he was buried next to Anna at the Lutheran Cemetery there.[14]

Anna Marie Malinda BRACKMAN was born on 24 July 1865, in Concordia, Lafayette County, Missouri to August BRACKMAN and Sophie OETTING.

Friedrich Johann Heinrich BRACKMANN is our earliest known BRACKMAN ancestor.  He was born, calculated, on 16 January 1730 at Esperke, Newstadt am Rübenberge, Hanover, Germany, illegitimate son of the deceased dragoon (heavily armed mounted troop) BRACKMANN.[15]  Esperke was a village of 350 people in 1919, in the District (County) of Newstadt am Rübenberge, in the Provincial District of Hannover, Prussia (Germany),[16] about 17 miles east of Drakenburg.  He married Sophie Louise GEHRKEN.  She was born 24 September 1737 in Mehnsen, Friesland, Gottingschen, Germany.[17] and died on 15 January 1803 in Esperke.[18]  They had eight children, the 4th being Johann Friedrich BRACKMAN.  Johann Heinrich died of “Gicht” (gout), on 20 April 1799 in Esperke.[19]

Johann Friedrich BRACKMANN born 3 August 1771 in Esperke and was baptized there on the 6th[20].  On 8 May 1801, he married Anna Marie Elisabeth BROCKMANN of Schwarmstedt, in the chapel at Esperke.[21]  She was born on 8 October 1782 in Schwarmstedt to Johann Ludwig Friedrich BROCKMAN and Marie Angneese SPECKHAN.[22]  She died “of old age” on 29 August 1840, at 58 years, 6 months, and was buried on the 30th.[23]  They had eleven children, the second being Johann Heinrich Ludwig BRACKMAN.  Johann Friedrich was a medium sized land farmer.[24]  He died of a chest illness on 14 April 1839 at 67 years, 9 months old and was buried on the 19th.[25]

Johann Heinrich Ludwig BRACKMAN was born on 20 August 1804 at Esperke, and was baptized on 26 August in Niedernstocken (Parish)  Hannover Germany.  He was confirmed on 5 April 1818.  He was described as having “almost good” skills with medium insight/cognitive skills[26].  With Christine Dorothee Giseke, he had an illegitimate son, Heinrich Friedrich Ludwig BRAACKMANN.  The records do not indicate what happened to Christine or Heinrich.[27]  As Johann Heinrich BRACKMANN, former Cannonier in the Hannover Army,  on 20 August 1830 married Anna Catharine GÖMANN, born 16 November 1806, legitimate daughter of Jürgen Dietrich GÖMANN, small farmer in Esperke, and Anna Maria GOSEWISCH.[28]  They had four children born in Esperke, before immigrating to America.[29]

“The Brackmans sailed for America from Port Hanne, Bremen, Germany on October 26, 1840, on the ship Alvina.  The master of the ship was F. W. Rodman.  They were on the ocean for 88 days, landing at a port in New Orleans, Louisiana, on January 21 1841.  They had three sons; Fritz, George and Henry, when they left Germany.  A fourth son, August, was born November 23, 1840, on the ship on the Atlantic Ocean, . . .”[30]

The index for the Ship Alvina, shows that she departed Bremen, Germany, and arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana, on 11 January 1841.  The index of the manifest lists, with Family Number 6037, J. H. R. BRACKMAN, age 36; Anna Cath., age 34; Gg. Fried, age 10; and Gg. Wilh, age 5.  Son, Henry, is not listed in the Alvina index.[31]

In 1850, as Henry and Mary BROCKMAN, they are living in Freedom Township, Lafayette County, Missouri, farming, with children Federick [sic], age 19, born in Germany, which would be Gg. Fred on the Alivna manifest; George, age 15, born in Germany, which is probably Gg. Wilm on the Alvina manifest; Henry, age 13, born in Germany; Augustus, age 10, born at sea (on the Ship Alvina during the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean); Mary, age 7, born in Missouri; Malinda, age 5, born in Missouri; and William, age 2, born in Missouri.[32]  In 1860, the family is farming at Lexington, Freedom Township, as Henry and Mary BROCKMAN, with Melinda, age 15; Henry, age 23; August, age 19; Wm., age 12; and Lewis, age 9.  Living next to them is Fred BROCKMAN, age 29, Doris, age 20, Mary, age 1; and a Henry Friday, age 14.[33]  In 1870, they are farming at Concordia, Freedom Township, as Henry and Maria BRACKMAN, with Louis, Auguste BROCKHOFF, female age 9; a Henry Meier, laborer, and Adelheid Fieldmann, servant.[34]
