This page last updated: 1 September 2007

Duty2 WHITE (William1 WHITE), born about 1800 in New York,[1]  is listed as a son of William WHITE in a 1921 Boston Transcript genealogy inquiry.[2]  In the 1830 census, Duty WHITE, age 20-29, lives in Grove, Allegany County, New York, and is listed six lines from William.[3]

On 27 August 1836, Sheriff Smith of Allegany County . . .” by virtue of a certain writ of Execution...out of the Court Of common Pleas...in favor of Sheldon Spencer plaintiff against Duty WHITE, defendant...goods and chattels lands & tenements of the said defendant he should cause to be made certain monys [sic] in the said writ specified...whereas said defendant not having sufficient goods & chattels...did...levy...sold at Nunda Valley $115. Town of Grove, SW corner of lot 12, TS 6, 50 acres.”[4]

In 1840, Duty, in Granger, is listed as age 40 to 49, with a female, 20-29 and two young males.[5]  In 1850, Duty, age 50, is living one county west of Allegany County, in Cattaraugus County, Farmersville Township. He is living with Samantha, age 35, born about 1815, Andrew J., age 15, and George W., age 12.[6]  In 1860, there is a Duty WHITE, age 60, born in New York, farming in Bradford Township, McKean County, Pennsylvania.  Listed on the same page is a Geo. WHITE, age 21, born in New York[[7]].   These ages match the ages of our WHITEs.  A Doty White is listed in a early transcription of Short Tract Cemetery gravestones, listing his age at death as 34.  No dates are given in the transcription.[8]  This is not our Duty WHITE as he was at least 50 years old in 1850.  No gravestone for Duty was found in a search of the cemetery in 2004.[9]

Children of Duty2 WHITE and Samantha (--?--) are as follows:

i. Andrew J.3 WHITE was born circa 1835.

ii. George W. WHITE was born circa 1838.
