Electa WHITE
1801-1858

This page last updated: 31 August 2007

Electa2 WHITE was born, calculated, in 1801 in New York.[1]  Circumstantially, it is believed that Electa is the daughter of our William WHITE.  The 1820 census shows that William had two females living with him, between the ages of 16 to 25, with year of birth between 1795 and 1804.[2]  If she was born to William’s second wife Blandina (Dina) FLAGLER, she was probably born in Dutchess or Oneida County, New York.

Historical references tell us that, in 1821, an Ephraim BULLOCK was married to Electa WHITE, daughter of William WHITE, the second marriage in Granger, Allegany County, New York.[3]

In the 1820 census for Nunda (later named Granger), Allegany County, Ephraim BULLOCK is listed the line immediately above William WHITE.  Living with Ephraim is a male, 16 to 25, born between 1795 and 1804, presumably a brother.[4]  In the 1830 census for Grove, Wm WHITE, Duty WHITE and Ephm BULLOCK are all listed on the same page.  Living with Ephraim is a male 20 to 29, presumably the male listed on the 1820 census; a female age 5 to 9, presumably Abigail,[5] and a female Electa’s age.[6]  Ephraim was a contemporary of Moses WHITE, both having been elected as Granger Town Officers on 5 March 1839, Moses as an overseer of the poor and Ephraim as a commissioner of common schools.[7]  In 1840, Ephraim is living in Granger, the only male in the family, with two females under five; one female between 5 and 9 years, which, presumably would be Mary, age 6.[8] and a female age 30 to 39, which would be Electa, age 39.[9]  In 1850, Ephraim, age 57, a farmer; Electa, age 49; Abigail, age 28; Mary, age 16; and a John Dory, age 16, are living in Granger.[10]

Electa died on 12 May 1857[11] or 1858[12] and was buried at Short Tract Cemetery, Granger.  Several BULLOCKs are buried at Short Tract Cemetery: Anner, age 5; Abigail, age 57; Elmira, age 70; Electra [sic], 57; Ephraim, age 90; Eunice, age 41; and Harrison, age 19.[13]

We learn further of Ephraim BULLOCK from the local history:[14]

“One of the best known of the early settlers is Ephraim Bullock, who was born in Stratford, Orange county, Vt., in 1792.  In company with his father and mother(John and Tabitha Bullock) and their family, Ephraim started from his native state for western New York February 17th, 1813.  When they reached Palatine, Montgomery county, Mr. and Mrs. Bullock were stricken with a fever and died at the end of a week, and were laid to rest in one grave.  Before the children could proceed on their journey Ephraim was taken sick, and it was not until forty-two days from that of their departure from their New England home that they arrived (making the journey with a four-ox team) at Caledonia, Livingston county.  There they rented one room of the cabin of Captain Pinnick, in which they lived while Ephraim worked out for the neighboring settlers, clearing land and farming until 1817, when he decided to learn the cooper's trade.  He was thus engaged for three years, at the expiration of which (1820) he removed to Granger, and was married the next year to Electa, daughter of William White.

The marriage above mentioned was probably the second in the town, the first having been celebrated during the spring of the same year, the contracting parties having been Isaac Hatch, who has been mentioned in connection with early building in the town, and Clarissa Pratt.

In 1822 Mr. Bullock bought one hundred and sixty acres of lot number 20 (nearly all of which he cleared), and afterwards traded with Van Norstrand for one hundred acres where he now lives.  Mr. Bullock served with the "Silver Grays" in the war of 1812.  Mrs. Bullock died May 12th, 1857.

It will be noted that a number of families settled on or near Short Tract in 1819 and 1820.  Of the settlers of that day Ephraim Bullock and Isaac Hatch are the only survivors.  In 1854 Hatch went west, where he now (1878) lives.”

Ephraim and daughters Abigail and Mary were still living in Granger Township in 1860,[15] and in Nunda Post Office, Granger Township in 1870,[16]  In 1880, Ephraim was living in Granger, with daughter, Mary, age 45, and her husband Samuel KINGSBURY, age 55; and his other daughter, Abigail, age 58.[17]  Cemetery records indicate that Abigail died at age of 57, so she probably died shortly after the census was taken on 1 June.  Ephraim died in 1882, as calculated from his grave records, and is buried at Short Tract Cemetery,[18]  By 1900, Mary (BULLOCK) KINGSBURY is the head of household, age 65, born in January of 1835 and a widow.  One child was born to her that died.   Living with her was hired help, William R. and Mary E. Miller.[19]  In 1910, age 74, she is still living in Granger.[20]  Mary died in 1918, calculated from the cemetery records, at age 82 and is buried at Short Tract Cemetery.  Other KINGSBURYs buried there are George, age 24; ??al, age 3; Samuel Jr.,  no age given; Samuel, age 87; and Selina Pitt, no age given.[21]

The birthplace and parents of Electa's father, William, is not known for certain.  The following research on the name Electa White is given in the hope of finding a link.  Several Electa Whites from that era are documented, most are descendants of Elder John White of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Hartford Connecticut and Hadley Massachusetts.  They are:

Electa White, b. 04 June 1764 to Lieut. Elihu and Zeruiah (Cole) White of Hatfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.

Electa WHITE, b. 22 September 1775 to Salmon (brother of Elihu, above) and Mary (Wait) White, of Hatfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.

Electa White, b. 13 September 1778 to Samuel and Mary (Collins) White of South Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.

Electa White, b. 20 February 1783 to Capt. Daniel and Sarah (Hale) White of Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut; m. Richard Williams; d. 25 March 1851 in Union Springs, Cayuga County, New York.

Electa White, b. 03 November 1794 to Elijah and Mary (Smith) White of Hatfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.[22]

Another Electa White was born 16 April 1799 in Phillipston, Worchester County, Massachusetts, to Simeon Howard and Electa (Warner) White.[23]

The ancestors of Ephraim BULLOCK have connections with Dutchess County at the same time that William and Blandina (Dinah FLAGLER) WHITE lived there.  .  Ephraim’s Great Grandfather, Richard BULLOCK was born 01 July 1692 in Rehoboth, Bristol County, Massachusetts[24] and removed to Nine Partners, Dutchess County, where he died in 1780.  Several of his children came to Dutchess County with him and raised families of their own there.  Several BULLOCKs were buried in Dutchess County cemeteries: at the Milan Christian Church Churchyard Cemetery; Pleasant Valley Methodist Churchyard; Bangall Baptist Church Churchyard and Bear Market Community ground; buried between  1812 and 1861.[25]

Of interest, but not verified, is that the 41st President of the United States, George Herbert Walker BUSH and the 43rd President of the United States, George Walker BUSH, descend from Thankful BULLOCK, sister of Ephraim’s Great-Grandfather, Richard BULLOCK, born 1692.[26]

Children of Electa2 White and Ephraim Bullock both born in Granger, Allegany County, New York, were as follows:

i. Abigail3 Bullock was born in New York, circa 1822.[27]  It appears that Abigail remained unmarried and lived with her parents or sister all her life. She died 24 August 1882 at age 70, and is buried at Short Tract Cemetery.[28]

ii. Mary Bullock was born in 1835.[29]  By 1880, she has married Samuel Kingsbury where they are farming in Granger, Allegany County, New York.  Living with them are her father, Ephraim and sister, Abigail.[30]   In 1900, she is farming at Granger with hired help, William P. and Mary E. Miller.[31]  In 1910, she is still farming in Granger with William P. Miller, 61, Laborer; and Nita[?] Marybell Thayer, 13.  Mary died in 1915 and is buried at Short Tract Cemetery, Granger.[32]
