Emily Elizabeth WHITE
1845-1924

This page last updated: 3 Sepember 2007

Emily Elizabeth3 White (John2, William1 WHITE) was born to John WHITE and Thankful CLARK on 6 May 1845 at Short Tract, Granger Township, Allegany County, New York.[1]  She married Joseph DIR, on 4 September 1866 at Princeton, Bureau County Illinois.[2]

Prior to their marriage, Joseph, on 10 February 1864, enlisted as a private in Company D, 64th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Union Army, from Mendota, LaSalle County.  From the Muster Roll, he was described as age 21, 5’ 6”, light hair, blue eyes light complexion.  While Joseph was attached to the 64th, he was engaged in action on the Chattahoochee, River, Georgia, at Decatur, the siege of Atlanta that begun the march to the sea, operations against Savannah, the Carolina campaign and the battle of Bentonville where Confederate General Johnston was captured.  Joseph was mustered out on 11 July 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky.[3]

In 1870, Joseph and Emily are farming in Yorktown, Fairfield Township, Bureau County, Illinous, with daughter Edith, age three, and an Albert Molsen, age 16, a farm laborer.[5]  By 1880, Joseph and Emily removed to Corning Township, Adams County, Iowa.  Joseph is a canvassing agent in the mining industry.  Their children were, Edith W., age 12; Lewis V., age 10; Bertie (Wilbur), age 3, and Elmer, age 1.[6]  In 1900, Joseph and Emily are farming at Carl Township, Adams County, with sons, Bertie W. and Frankie P.[7]  By 1910, Emily (as Emma) is living with son, Frank K. [R.], in Summerset Township, Adair County, Iowa.  She is listed as married for 44 years.[8]  Joseph is living alone in Locust Grove, Guadalupe County, New Mexico.  He is listed as widowed, a farmer, owning his own farm, free of a mortgage.  On the adjoining property lives Clara (Clarissa WHITE, b. 1848) SPAULDING, sister of Emily.  Clarissa is a widow and living with her son Arthur, (John Arthur SPAULDING, b. 1886).[9]  In 1880, both families of Joseph and Emily DIR, and Clara and William SPAULDING were living in Corning, Adams County, Iowa.[10]

In 1916, Emily Elizabeth (WHITE) DIR submitted an application to the DAR, listing herself as the wife of Joseph DIR.  She gave her address as Stuart, Iowa.  There are handwritten entries indicating her membership was dropped on 1 July 1920 and reinstated on 9 February 1921.  The State of Iowa and city of Stuart are crossed out and N.Y. and S. Dansville entered.[11]  This may indicate that she moved to South Dansville, Steuben County by 1921.  There are, however, no census records to be found for her in 1920.

In 1920, there are two census entries for Joseph DIR.  The first, enumerated on 31 January 1920, shows Joseph, age 76, married, born in Pennsylvania as were his parents, living with his son, Bert W. DIR, age 43, in Stuart, Guthrie County, Iowa[12]  The second entry, enumerated 21 March 1920, shows Joseph DIR, age 76, married, born in Pennsylvania, as an “inmate” (patient) at the National Military Home, Malibu, Los Angeles County, California.[13]  This is an “old soldiers home” for Civil War Veterans with almost 3,500 soldiers listed.  In the same year, living in Glendale, Los Angeles County, is Joseph’s son, John E. DIR.[14]  It is assumed that after January, Joseph was placed in the Home to receive extended or medical care.

Joseph DIR was born 16 December 1842, one of 14 children of George William DIR and Elizabeth HARRIS,[16] Joseph died on 19 August, 1929, and is buried at Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, Bates County, Missouri.[17]

Joseph’s obituary reads:

DIEDJoseph Dir passed away after a brief illness at the hospital at Butler, Mo., August 19, 1929, at the age of 86 years, 8 months and 3 days.  He has made his home with his son, Bert Dir, for the last four years.  He was only sick a few days.  He was laid to rest in Crescent Hill cemetery at Adrian Mo.  None of the children from away were present at the funeral except Bert Dir and family from Stuart, Iowa.  Mr. Dir was a former resident of Adams county.[18]
