This page last updated: 1 September 2007

Moses2 WHITE (William1 WHITE) was born to William WHITE and Blandina FLAGLER on 23 August 1809 in Oneida County, New York.[1]  In 1830, he is probably living with his parents in Grove, Allegany County, New York[2]  At the Granger Town Meeting of 05 March 1839, Moses WHITE was elected as an Overseer of the Poor.[3]  In 1850, Moses is living in Granger, six dwellings removed from his brother John.  Living with Moses is his wife, Katherine (Caty), age 34 and children: William C., age 8; and Mary C., age 4.[4]  Caty died 8 January 1851, aged 34 Yrs. 3 Mo. 10 d’s, and is buried at Short Tract Cemetery, Granger.  Caty may have died in childbirth as the inscription “Also an Infant Child” is carved on her stone.[5]

In 1851, soon after Caty’s death, Moses moved with his children to a farm in Ashbury Northville Township, LaSalle County, Illinois.[6]  On 19 August 1852, Moses married Jane Ann COOKE in LaSalle County.[7]  Daughter Lucy Belle WHITE was born in 1854.[8], [9]  The 1860 census for Northville Township, lists Moses and wife, Jane A., age 48; children William C., age 17; Mary C. age 14; Lucy B., age 6; and a George W. Nichols, 22, farm laborer; Louisa Hasmann, 18, servant; and Ida L. Swits, age 4.[10]  From his obituary:

“Here the family lived until after the War of Rebellion, when his son William, returning from the army, took charge of the farm with his sister Mary, and the rest of the family moved to Sandwich [DeKalb County, Illinois].”[11]

On 21 June 1870, Moses, Jane A., and Bell, age 16, were farming in Somonauk Township, DeKalb County.[12] On June 13, William and Mary are living on the Asbury farm with an Edwin Phillips, 19, Farm Laborer.[13]

“In 1870 Mr. White lost both his wife and his son, one dying in July and the other in August.  The farm was then rented and the entire family, now consisting of the father and two daughters, have lived ever since in Sandwich.”

Moses died 22 August 1879 and

“. . . was buried beside his kindred in the Dickson Cemetery, south of town [Sandwich].  Mr. White was a man of great intelligence and worth, of great energy and sterling sense, frugal and honest, and by his industry amassed a competence.  He was for several years an active member of the Asbury M.E. Church, retaining his connection with it until he came to Sandwich.  Here he lived quietly enjoying the society of his family and friends.”[14]
